So, were I to comment on your comment, I would say,
"That explains the low level of education common amongst Obama voters."
This is a deictic word that does not inherently point anywhere. You have to examine context to determine its meaning; if it always simply pointed to itself, it would be more or less useless. This is an example of the fact that Obama crushes McCain among college-educated voters.
